Meyer, as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheBrettMcMurphy\/posts\/2042037522486968\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously in July, told media members that he was unaware of the alleged domestic violence incidents concerning Zach Smith, a member of his coaching staff.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n <a id=\"O0CV6PD8TFFBR_Lb9pp03g\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/460966186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'O0CV6PD8TFFBR_Lb9pp03g',sig:'Fmg7ePFOWHMwe1oqYZNx1s4F86BoeIUJYu7YavD_Ml0=',w:'594px',h:'424px',items:'460966186',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\n <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Meyer may not have been completely honest about his<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college-football\/2018\/08\/03\/urban-meyer-statement-zach-smith-ohio-state\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knowledge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the incidents of domestic violence with Coach Smith. And despite that past knowledge, he continued to employ Smith. We know that there was discussion between members of the coaching staff, their partners and later we learned Meyer<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ncaaf\/bigten\/2018\/08\/03\/urban-meyer-admits-he-knew-2015-incident-alleged-abuse\/901821002\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to officials at the university. Yet little, if anything, was done until Smith was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-football\/news\/ohio-state-fires-assistant-coach-zach-smith-after-string-of-domestic-violence-allegations\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in late July when he was the subject of a civil protective order. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if Coach Meyer followed protocol and reported these issues to Ohio State officials, there are still significant issues with the decision to keep Smith on staff. Reporting is a requirement of these types of incidents, but it is not a sufficient response to it. In the end, continuing to employ someone who was hurting his wife runs counter to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyleRowland\/status\/1021544284795953155\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1021544284795953155&amp;ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.si.com%252Fcollege-football%252F2018%252F08%252F01%252Furban-meyer-paid-leave-ohio-state-core-values\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">core values<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which include \u201ctreat women with respect.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culture cannot live on written core values, it must be lived in practice and action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a viewer and fan, I\u2019m moving to a place in my sport experience where I can\u2019t separate athletics from incidents of domestic and sexual violence. Especially in the time of #MeToo, which showed that silence about sexual harassment, misconduct and abuse helps conceal bad behavior. We all play a role in taking a stand against those who are responsible for or complicit in these types of violence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Titus, an Ohio State alum<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/2018\/8\/9\/17665722\/ohio-state-urban-meyer-zach-courtney-smith-case\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Ringer: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFans have helped Ohio State become the behemoth institution that it is. But the one thing I implore everyone in Buckeye Nation to agree on\u2014and the one thing that the university\u2019s administration surely should not lose sight of\u2014is that Urban Meyer needs Ohio State much more than Ohio State needs Urban Meyer.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sport is bigger than anyone who tolerates or participates in domestic or sexual violence. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programs like Ohio State have to decide what they want to be as an institution. But much of that comes from what we as fans decide to concede. Fans are the third rail that powers sport.
