Over the years, RALIANCE has awarded grants to several sexual violence prevention projects and organizations led by and serving in the Latinx community, which is a population that is often impacted by sexual violence yet historically overlooked by funders. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, RALIANCE is proud to highlight how some of these incredible grantees supporting survivors and helping make their communities safer.

YWCA of Southern Arizona – In 2019, YWCA of Southern Arizona earned a $50,000 RALIANCE grant to expand “Promotoras Rompiendo Cadenas,” a year-long- bilingual- community-based awareness and prevention program that helps remove barriers for Latinx victims of sexual violence seeking help and reporting abuse. Studies show one in three Latinas report experiencing intimate partner and unfortunately, like many other minority women, they are less likely to seek support for a number of reasons including language difficulties, cultural expectations and more. Through Promotoras, survivors were equipped to become advocates for others in their communities.

Coordinadora Paz Para La Mujer (Peace Coordinator for Women) – In 2018, this Puerto-Rican based organization earned $50,000 for their program “Jangueo con Sentido”, which roughly translates to “Hanging out with sense, hanging out with consent.” With Jangueo con Sentido, they were able to work across college campuses to foster respectful and healthy college environments on campuses as well as in sports and at crowded events by promoting awareness and educational activities around sexual consent.

East Los Angeles Women’s Center – For nearly 50 years, ELAWC has supported thousands of survivors of domestic and sexual violence, including having the distinct honor of becoming the nation’s first bilingual hotline for Spanish–speaking survivors of sexual assault. In 2016, they earned a $50,000 RALIANCE grant to expand their “Promotoras” program. The word translates to “promotor,” and they are a league of Latinas trained as community advocates for their peers who are survivors or at risk of sexual violence.

RALIANCE is so honored to partner with these organizations who help improve the quality of life and empower survivors and allies in and around their communities every day. We are currently working on selecting the 2023 grantees, so please stay tuned. In the meanwhile, you can learn more about past grantees in our directory.
